    From last Wednesday

The family of seriously injured jockey Kristy Bennett say she remains unconscious after suffering a traumatic brain injury when coming off a horse at the Gold Coast trials more than a fortnight ago.

The thoughts of the Australian racing community have been with Bennett and her loved ones since the jockey plunged off a horse in a freak accident after a trial had concluded.

Her sister Bella and mother Irene issued the following statement late Tuesday afternoon.

“Kristy remains stable after suffering traumatic brain injury and vertebrae fractures,” the family said.

“She remains unconscious and her rehabilitation could take years to complete and her journey dealing with this injury is far from over.

“Going forward, we won’t have any updates for some time while the amazing doctors and nurses do their incredible work providing Kristy with the best possible care.

“On behalf of our family and Kristy we want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone in Queensland and Western Australia for their unwavering love and support.”

Bennett had recently shifted from Western Australia to Queensland and had been riding trackwork for Tony Gollan, among other trainers, while also seeking riding opportunities across the Sunshine State.

Gollan is among those who have visited Bennett in hospital over the past fortnight, while Queensland Jockeys’ Association boss Glen Prentice has been a tower of strength.

That was the exact report I was looking for, didn't want to repeat it in case I was wrong although I knew I'd seen it

Seriously injured jockey Kristy Bennett has opened her eyes
for the first time since sustaining life-altering injuries in a fall during
Gold Coast trials earlier in June.

Bennett remains in a stable condition in a Gold Coast
hospital, where she has been fighting to recover from a traumatic brain injury
suffered when she fell from a Tony Gollan-trained horse in a freak accident at
    the trials.

The 29-year-old relocated from Western Australia to
Queensland only recently, riding trackwork for Gollan and other trainers as she
chased riding opportunities across the Sunshine State.

The first sign of meaningful progress came on Monday
morning, when Bennett's sister Bella shared an update with supporters via
    Facebook.

"Big news: She's awake. Her eyes have been open most of
today for the first time since the accident," Bella wrote.

"We're observing her reacting to discomfort by pulling
at her feeding tube and neck brace.

"While she hasn't yet followed commands, she appears
agitated when we stop her. It's wonderful that she's responding to her body.

"Additionally, she reaches for her dog Gus's
    picture."

Beyond the brain trauma, Bennett is also dealing with two
spinal fractures and a torn ligament in her neck.

Despite the severity of those injuries, Bella said the
    medical team remained quietly optimistic.

"The team is confident she'll walk again with lots of
physio," she wrote, while noting that Bennett currently requires a
    tracheostomy.

"We are confident that it can be taken out next week as
she is breathing and coughing on her own."

The road ahead, however, will be long and demanding.

Bella said doctors had advised that the next 18 months of
rehabilitation would ultimately determine Bennett's baseline function.

"What this means is she will have severe disabilities –
we are unsure of the extent at this time," she wrote.

Bennett will require daily rest, neurological rehabilitation
and intensive physiotherapy as her recovery unfolds.

We certainly wish her all the best.

It brought me to wondering how Kristy Banks is getting on these days after her nasty fall at Toowoomba a few years ago. There was a short documentary on TV about her recovery a while back but nothing since.

I've just heard that Kristy has got a flight home (Medivac) on Sunday. Her rehab will be long and agonising so as a passionate racing person myself I ask everyone to hope/pray for the best possible outcome for Kristy and the rest of her family
