Seriously injured jockey Kristy Bennett has opened her eyes
for the first time since sustaining life-altering injuries in a fall during
Gold Coast trials earlier in June.
Bennett remains in a stable condition in a Gold Coast
hospital, where she has been fighting to recover from a traumatic brain injury
suffered when she fell from a Tony Gollan-trained horse in a freak accident at
the trials.
The 29-year-old relocated from Western Australia to
Queensland only recently, riding trackwork for Gollan and other trainers as she
chased riding opportunities across the Sunshine State.
The first sign of meaningful progress came on Monday
morning, when Bennett's sister Bella shared an update with supporters via
Facebook.
"Big news: She's awake. Her eyes have been open most of
today for the first time since the accident," Bella wrote.
"We're observing her reacting to discomfort by pulling
at her feeding tube and neck brace.
"While she hasn't yet followed commands, she appears
agitated when we stop her. It's wonderful that she's responding to her body.
"Additionally, she reaches for her dog Gus's
picture."
Beyond the brain trauma, Bennett is also dealing with two
spinal fractures and a torn ligament in her neck.
Despite the severity of those injuries, Bella said the
medical team remained quietly optimistic.
"The team is confident she'll walk again with lots of
physio," she wrote, while noting that Bennett currently requires a
tracheostomy.
"We are confident that it can be taken out next week as
she is breathing and coughing on her own."
The road ahead, however, will be long and demanding.
Bella said doctors had advised that the next 18 months of
rehabilitation would ultimately determine Bennett's baseline function.
"What this means is she will have severe disabilities –
we are unsure of the extent at this time," she wrote.
Bennett will require daily rest, neurological rehabilitation
and intensive physiotherapy as her recovery unfolds.
