Bunbury Cup Sunday 8/3/2020
West Australian Racing
Just jumping in early for Sunday...a field of twelve at this stage, no stars in it but some handy ones and a few battlers.
Two faves in order are Arctic Stream and The Big Show.
Been an Arctic Stream fan but going to veer away slightly from him.
Won't be easy with 59.5kgs and first up since early January, but going for Spiritual Warrior, was badly held up at a vital stage in the Perth Cup and did well to come back and run 5th, was impressive winner beforehand going into the Cup.
Mackenzie Brook, Arctic Stream, and The Big Show all huge dangers.
Craig Newitt to ride roughie Plays The Game.
After being placed in the Narrogin, Albany and Esperance Cups and with in form Smokin Jo Azzopardi riding, wouldn't be surprised soft run on pace if Superior Smile placed again.
1. Spiritual Warrior
2. Arctic Stream
3. Mckenzie Brook
4. The Big Show
Best roughies - Plays The Game and Superior Smile.

Won five Group Ones on Miss Andretti.
Four Group Ones aboard Lankan Rupee.
Other Group Ones on Tarzino and Extreme Choice.
First Group One was Perfect Promise in the 2006 CF Orr Stakes.
Was surprised has ridden 35 winners for Chris Waller.
Recall when he first started and that distinctive left hand. Can't beat the ones who use their left hand and left leg on the footy field! I was often turning those backmen inside out haha yeah right.

Mckenzie Brook scratched.
Once again ( recall last campaign ) Spiritual Warrior - the horse many punters take an aversion to, out the door to as much 9/1 with Corps.
The Big Show now fave ahead of Arctic Stream.
Pike aboard Red Army into 15/2 ( $8.50 ) with Tabtouch.
The rough one thought had a place chance Superior Smile into 5/1 with Tabtouch...what the..?
Couldn't win Narrogin, Albany, Esperance Cups when think probably started better than 5/1. Give it a chance but 5/1 that's rock bottom odds, surely closer to 10/1 or 12/1 by start time.
Wrinkly has also come in from double figures to 8/1 him and Superior Smile, they'll be right there when swing for home.
Yes the Dark Musket hits the turf again - only won the 5 races but placed 20 times - over 600k in the bank. Can't believe he's only won the five. Those 20 place cheques have added up - 3rd in a Kingston Town helps too.
Reckon Spiritual Warrior underrated. Pretty consistent - won races like the Apprentices Cup, Kalgoorlie Cup, ATA Quality - think runs second at least in the Perth Cup, if not held up at a crucial time. 59.5kgs and first up - he's already unpopular!
Will happen very soon where a good horse resuming over the distance wins one of these big races, happens regularly overseas but still somewhat foreign territory here.
A few punters today said no first up to amazing Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare - didn't win but was a tremendous run for third at big odds over the 2000 metres.
Arctic Stream
Spiritual Warrior
Plays The Game
Dark Musket
Adding The Big Show as well - pretty sure was scratched late from a Perth Cup.
6/4 Arctic Stream - too short.
11/4 Superior Smile - too short.
9/2 Red Army - too short.
11/2 Wrinkly - too short.
Just 11/1 for an out of form He's A Parker - too short.
Not a classic field that's for sure.
Even with the scratchings Spiritual Warrior remains unwanted.
7/1 Spiritual Warrior ✔️
12/1 Plays The Game ✔️

Not quite a "I'll walk to Chile" if wins...but not far off. Good luck to him if wins it, will be one of the biggest reversals of form since a poor Fitzroy defeated the Eagles!
Superior Smile nearly 3/1 and liked him as a roughie. Nice one.
Red Army 9/2 him and He's A Parker should have a match race to see who can finally run a place! Does have a handy hoop Red Army and strong stable.
Something has to win it. There'll be some good runs and a few shockers no doubt.
Im giving it a sneaky hope it that field. But if im to have a bet its on wrinkly

Superior Smile definetly a record breaker - no time in history would a horse have been placed the same year in Narrogin, Albany, Esperance, Bunbury Cups! That's one fair training effort to have a staying type do that well - no matter the field strength.
Arctic Stream - why went off him fractionally - a mystery! Did get out to 7/4 on tote - better than the early 6/4.

Arctic Stream - another great effort, and Paul Harvey continues to get the best out of him.
He's A Parker - well ridden, got out behind the tiring ones, then through on the inside of Wrinkly - much improved effort.
Superior Smile - doesn't know how to run a bad race.
Wrinkly - set them a merry dance and fought on well, been showing some good grit lately. Just found out late.
Spiritual Warrior hmmmm - early on in the race looked perfect for him - couldn't have been better placed. Basically settled 5th and ran 5th. Not too far away at the end, but you'd have thought he'd get past Wrinkly.
Dark Musket - he was the best of the rest and the rest weren't much. Still he battled away.
Plays The Game - think he's had his trot, didn't come on at all, just before the corner looked as if had something up the sleeve, but never ran on at all.
Cougar Express - perfectly ridden run of the race, but when the pressure went on was out of there.
Juicing Carrots - thought might run a cheeky race, up in the breeze on the outside of Wrinkly, he ran out of juice.
Best run - Arctic Stream by a mile.
Just realised Red Army must have been another scratching and that's why just the nine, so around 7/4 Arctic Stream for fave backers turned out well.
Dissapointing that Mackenzie Brook, The Big Show, Red Army all came out.
There was only one horse you wanted to be on on the bend

He's A Parker three back the inside - had a dream run.
Superior Smile - one out one back - Smokin Jo had it in the worlds perfect spot.
Spiritual Warrior - had it softer than butter, no excuses today.
Wrinkly - was his normal self, battled away well off a good speed.
2nd 3rd 5th - perfect trips - Harvey came from behind them - was fave so expected to do the job and did it with aplomb. He's an unusual one - bit of a grinder but with a touch of class.
Recall that run before the Perth Cup when Pikey ride, goodness gracious what should he have won by that day?!
A few punting acquaintances thought his run in the Perth Cup just fair at best, but thought was very very good. Can all see it differently.
The first up run this campaign when Lord Help Me Run and Red Publisher beat him home was a bit dissapointed in that run - but what should've realised immediately was that he's being set for the Bunbury Cup and races like that and probably has 10 lengths improvement in him.
