Ratings question
West Australian Racing
We have a maiden horse who ran second at a Pinjarra Maiden last week on a rating of 56.
It received 4 points for running second. The winner who was rated 60 received no points.
On contacting the handicapper he has said that is correct . We ran 3rd to night war six starts ago in a six horse field. The horse in question has a record 10 - 0 -1-1. Thoughts anyone!!

Is ridiculous to rate a race based on a horses performance from 6 starts ago, especially the 2nd placegetter.
If that is the case then the winner should cop 7 points so these horses meet on the same terms next time.
Disclaimer - i'm not 100% sure about the re-rating in maiden races; i.e. do 1st and 2nd get re-rated from the maiden benchmark rating?
If so the winner should be getting penalised and either way your rating should not be going up more than the winners to match the winners rating.
It doesn't sound right - u sure the winner wasn't penalised?
Winner is a filly (judging by the weights)
You been rated effectively 4 points lower than it
Or Put another way - it beat you carrying 2kg less
Would now meet on equal weights (ie it's copped 2kg compared to you)
At the maiden class race PC carries 2kg less and duly wins
If we meet next in a ratings race we meet at level weights, and HH is a 10 start maiden!
Prior to the race its rated 2kg better, after PC winning the race we are rated the same.
Is there anyone else ever seen a placegetter getting 4 points, and the winner none, i'd like to see past history!
Sounds a bit tough to me. But then, i have always struggled to understand how it works!! :?
i'm trying to figure how the handicapper has done this.
if a filly wins a 3yo maiden it will get a rating of 58 usually.
if a male wins a 3yo maiden it gets a rating of 62.
that's because of the 2gk sex allowance in set weight races.
so that makes sense.
the problem in your race is that the winner was already rated at 60 so it can hardly be expected to get the usual 58 rating, it has to stay the same.
yours has received 60 because that's the stock standard for male horses that come 2nd in those 3yo maiden races.
but against all that, it's hard to see yours going up 4 points for coming second when winner gets a free win.
if i was you i would ask the handicapper for a detailed explanation,....if they just told you it was right and gave no reason, then that is not very good of them.
i guess it doesn't matter if we never win our maiden!
If we do win our maiden do we get 60,62 or 64+. If we get 62 then i guess it all works out, just means we are getting penalised if we go to a non maiden race and win.
I'm with Carey, ask for a full explanation from the handicapper...i have in the past and i have had adjustments done.....they do so many they sometimes over look the bigger picture...Worth a try anyway. Good luck
HH would have had 55kg
so now the maiden is run and won.
next time they meet in a 54-64, and PC still gets 57kg, but so too does HH.
how can that be fair???
PC gets free win, HH gets penalised for coming second.
of course it does not matter if HH sticks to maiden class where it is set weights and the rating is irrelevant.
but it can get worse.....say HH gets to win its maiden it then goes to 62, and in a 64 would then have to give weight to PC...it would get 58kg and PC 57kg!!
