3 rounds on the books and Burns leads the field by 1 shot at -4 from Adam Scott and JJ Spaun at -3.

It's been a tournament of patience and acceptance for those at the top. Bit by bit, players are falling off the wagon, for example, Ben Griffen playing beautifully up to 14, played the last 5 holes +4 and put himself basically out of it.

Pre tournament favorite Scheffler just could not get it going. He shot even to stay at +4 and played terribly, most notable he missed so many short putts and should be far closer.

Cam Young was solid and remains at +3. A bridge too far for him unless the leaders completely unravel.

All.up to Burns from my financial perspective, would be good to see Adam Scott prevail though!

Set the alarms for the back nine at about 5 am

Longest putt JJ Spaun had holed this year was 35'. On the back 9 today he sank a 40 footer and the longest putt by anyone this week, a whopping 64 footer to win it on 18.

Drive for show, putt for dough they say.

JJ did both. In spades. A very worthy winner in the toughest battle of attrition I think I have seen.

It was all going so well for Burns. He birdies 10 after the rain break and was at -2, 2 shots clear of Adam Scott and the chasers.

Then it fell apart. As happened so many times in the last 12 months with my investments :))

He doubles 11 and bogies 12. He's at +1 and now tied with 5 players. Not a bad thing, he is still in it.

The leaders start faultering. He has a short birdie putt on 14 to get back to Even and 1 ahead. He misses low.

Double on 15 where he gets a pretty rough ruling for casual water. Hindsight shows he was robbed. Even after two opinions.

Meanwhile, McIntyre, from 9 back, taps in for par at 18 and cards a +1. He knocks out other hopefuls in Rahm, Scheffler and Cam Young, 2 of my guys this week. He now sits and waits.

As @Rodent mentions, JJ Spaun hits a monster birdie to get back to +1. He enters the short 17th par 4 and absolutely stripes a drive to about 17 feet for eagle. He duly 2 putt birdies and head to the last with a one shot advantage.

Needing a missile off the tee, he delivers. In perfect position, he puts one on the green to 64 feet and needs a 2 putt for the title. Hovland, who is out of it at this stage, plays his second shot to 65 feet, directly behind Spauns ball. You couldn't have asked for a better look for Spain thanks to Viktor. Hovland 2 putts and it's left for JJ. A two putt he wins. A three putt and they are back for a playoff on Monday morning, reminiscent of this year's Players Championship where JJ was beaten by Rory

He steps up and in spine tingling fashion he launches his putt on at least a 10 foot left to right break and it sails in. It looked in from half way. And with that, he is the only one to break par for the week at the Oakmont monster and take something back from the course for the pros, hence his absolute worthiness as a winner.

He pockets about 5 million US and has exemptions for 5 years. He also has locked up his Ryder Cup spot for later this year. Quite the spoils.

Burns finished at +4, amazingly not my best result in the end, with Cam Young finishing at +3, who made absolutely nothing on Sunday.

Lastly, our old mate Scheffler. What could have been, as usual.

He finished at +4 and actually looked as though he might've stolen it again. He missed 5 short putts on Sunday and all of his 8 chances for birdie within 17 feet. He also had 7 x 3 putts for the week, and one was a 4 putt. He finished 5 back and his 3 putts alone out him out of it, given JJ had only 2 x 3 putts for the week. Scheffler was the only player in the top 20 to have 7 x 3 putts.

And with that, we have one major left, the Open at Portrush. I have two tickets alive, Hatton at $34 (bet him in January) and also the double with Rory at Masters at 340-1.

Lastly, just on Rory. He has gone full heel turn since the Masters win and is being extremely unlikeable at the moment. His petulance to the media and his unwillingness to engage sees him losing fans. It is in my opinion something bigger is going on. Could he be off to LIV? It would be unthinkable, but to be honest if he was ever going to go, next season would be it. He feels hung out to dry by the tour, and rightly so and now he has the career grand slam he, in his own words, has nothing else to prove.

    Golf, what a game.

Travellers Championship starts tonight, which is the last Signature event of the season. Before the swing across in Europe.

All the big dogs from last week are playing (except for the LIV boys of course).

    Cam Young $56 - 2 units
    JT Poston $67 - 1 unit
    Si Woo Kim $51 - 1.5 units

The season is coming close to it's last major already. Good viewing!

No collects across the board. A case of close but not cigar in the Rocket classic, Fitzpatrick was tied for the lead at one stage but finished 3 back at -19. Winner was Potgieter in a 5 hole playoff against Greyserman and Kirk. He becomes one of the youngest ever winners on your at 20 years old and is the youngest Saffer to win on the tour.

He grew up in Perth so we can claim him!
Wiki: He moved to Perth, Western Australia at age eight with his family, where he attended Kingsway Christian College and was a part of their golf program. He returned to South Africa aged 17 as Australia's COVID-19 policies hindered his ability to compete in tournaments.

Better late than never, the time honoured John Deere classic starts tonight.

I've had a go at 3 pre tournament with high hopes of breaking the drought

    Denny McCarthy $28
    Thriston Lawrence $67
    Harry Higgs $201

2.5 units out for 48.5 collect

It's going to be a birdie fest and you want driver accuracy but mainly putting. You'll need to shoot 66 every day to win!

Had a few novelties on the event surrounding Denny and Ben Griffen. The one I'll post here is wire to wire winner at $13. 2 units here.

    Good luck

The English summer is upon them and that means it's nearly Open time. They are playing the BMW classic en route to the Scottish Open then the Open.

I can help myself, 2 units on Jordan Smith at $26. It's the biggest price he has been since I can remember so have to have a crack
  • H-BOMBERH-BOMBER    10,567 posts
Half way mark in PGA tour Denny is 4 back of leader Ghim, who lead round 1 so the wire to wire is still alive.

Over in Germany at the BMW, Jordan Smith is 3 back in 3rd spot, well placed as usual. Can he finally get it done?

At least a couple.of interests alive for the weekend
  • H-BOMBERH-BOMBER    10,567 posts
Jordan Smith tied for the lead with 6 holes to play, in a battle royale with Dan Brown. Can he get it done?

Knowing Jordan, he'll miss by a shot.
  • H-BOMBERH-BOMBER    10,567 posts
And with that, he slips 2 back and drives one in the bush.

    He just cannot win
  • H-BOMBERH-BOMBER    10,567 posts
Suprising, they let me cash out for 7 units. He is 3 back with 4 to play.

    Watch him win now.
  • H-BOMBERH-BOMBER    10,567 posts
Yep, birdies the next hole. 2 back with 3 to play.

Comes to 16, makes par. Brown for birdie and a 3 shot lead, does a full 360 in the slowest of motions from only 5 feet, to keep the lead at 2.

Par 3 17th. Smith to 10 feet. Brown to 25 feet.

It's like a train wreck in slow motion. I'm convinced Smith will win now. Horrible feeling.
  • H-BOMBERH-BOMBER    10,567 posts
Both miss. Brown with a 2 shot lead going to the par 5 18th.

A short hole with water in front of the green. Anything can happen.
  • H-BOMBERH-BOMBER    10,567 posts
And a Brown wins by 2, vindicating the decision to cash Smith. He actually had a great chance to win it in the last 3 the holes but the putter left him with a few weak birdie tries.

Not a big watcher of Golf but the win of Grace Kim in the ASLPGA Evian Championship was nothing short of amazing,  certainly worth a watch if Fox shows a repeat. Remember this name Lottie Woad  21 year old from England.

    Agree Warren

was watching while waiting for Wimbledon, as exciting as it gets. Never gave up, could have chucked it in a few times especially the plug in the lip of the bunker. Approaches to 18 were inch perfect.

    Great watching, repeats on Kayo

Hi all from Bali. Coverage starts from 130 pm

Fascinating open coming up. Absolutely stacked field as expected with some older stalwarts qualified (ie Westwood, Stenson etc).

I've been on Tyrrell Hatton since January. He is sort of hidden away on LIV but has been playing consistently up until Andalucia which was one of the toughest tests I've ever seen, so much so they had to suspend round 1.

He generally shows up at these big UK events (ie 5 x Rolex winner) and your guaranteed a showing from him this week.

I'm on at $34 and have a double running with Rory from the Masters at $340-1.

Out side of this , I've had some $$$ on Xander Schauffele and Matt Fitzpatrick. Odds at $23 and $41.

Xander is Xander and he'll give a run for your money. Fitzpatrick has been building to this for the last month and I think he is a great chance.

Going to be carnage of the weather comes out as predicted!

The old Baracuda Championship is on tonight, known now as the ISCO championship. Max Homa the big name and shows how he is in free fall with his game at the moment not being at Royal Portrush

Backed a few for interest sake at large odds

    Homa $26
    Higgs $101
    Lipsky $126
    Villegas $301

Will have only a few eye cells on this.

What a great first round of golf, 5 with -4 and another 25 under par, the elements certainly changed during the day, if i was having a wager i'd be on Shane Lowry with Scottie Scheffler close second. Good luck to all.
  • H-BOMBERH-BOMBER    10,567 posts
Agree, it was a great first round. Plenty happening and the scoring is out there. And isn't!

Punting wise Fitz is one of the leaders and played a solid round of golf. Equally, 1 back is Hatton who also plugged away and scored when he could. Both are in the top 3 of par 5 scoring which is the difference of you can take care of the par 5s.

Xander was so/so shooting Even. Slow and steady wins the race but he needs to click up a gear given he will have an afternoon tee time.

Looking at the field and odds,.if you were to dive in after round 1, Hatton and Fitzpatrick are still at $12 and I think represent good value. Scheffler maintains favoritism at 3.25 closely followed by Rory.

Cameron Smith looks a very good speculative bet at $251. Normally, his putter is the thing that shines but not so in round 1. He is +1 and 5 shots back. But he has a late morning tee time and significantly, he leads the field in approach play. If that putter gets back to his near "best in the world" form, then he will go deep into the weekend. Worth a fiver you must think.

    Good luck!
