    Re Basil Simplus
You have to understand who he called up instead.
He got that excited he forgot about the rest of the competition.
    Classic example of WA media.

Good link...that's my evening down the spout scrolling through the years. I think that was Ron Barassi's last year at Melbourne, urged to leave by Norm Smith to "better himself" at Carlton. Norm Smith revered as he was, took on the Melbourne committee in 1965, after the committee refused to stump up funds to defend a defamation law suit from an Umpire whom Smith had accused of cheating, albeit subconscious cheating. The club sacked him, reinstated him and he hung around for a few years more but the wheels fell off the club. I think he ended up coaching over at Fitzroy or maybe South Melbourne but the Red Fox no longer ruled the henhouse.

Funny how we have a medal named for Fairest and Best in the Grand Final named after someone who publicly called an Umpire a cheat. Be a bit like awarding the Mark Jackson Medal to the most introverted player on the ground.

i only looked at the positions, and only just now read the page.
i was in the members(had a ladies members ticket and i was not yet a teenager), and i can still remember gablich(big fat bugger he was to me at the time) and his bounces, and our back pocket crompton kicking the goal.

not sure about the player positions though, as a lot are not how i remember them.

i can remember the acrimony with norm smith, but not the detail(too long ago), and i think barassi did leave after the 1964 gf.

as for barassi, i have always thought that petracca is the closest thing to barassi i have ever seen, in his style.
hopefully petracca ends up with more flags with melbourne than 31 did.

Petracca very similar, strong as an ox, nobody from the Bulldogs could hold him but I reckon he is a better kick than Barassi, more skilful. Could become anything in the next few years, him and Oliver will be potent  with Jacksons natural development. Bit scary the Dee's going forward.

i can't remember how good a kick barassi was, but petracca's disposal is certainly very very good.
maybe petracca will end up better overall, if he is not already.

i just happened to stumble on this the other day, and i never realised they had history.
    cop the picture!

Petracca’s kicking has been his weak point since day dot. He’s a superstar, played a superstar GF but you blokes are drinking the coolade on his disposal. Mid year Goodwin wanted to take him out of the midfield and play him forward because he was going at 39% by foot and butchered it. Gun but he’ll never be an elite kick

Just on Petracca - i read somewhere on the weekend - the size of him compared to other midfielders

I think it said he is not as tall as Dangerfield - but Danger is 92kg - however Petracca is 98 kg - try stopping that in full flight

I havent followed it closely - but i think he is an excellent and penetrating kick

Read before GF that he was 62% for the season......is that high or low? I think he kicks powerfully and to dangerous spots....and his dribble goal has to be bordering on elite but maybe not?

The dribble goal was brilliant footy under pressure but he’s more comfortable on instinct. That’s shelling peas, not an overly difficult kick to execute. The moment and pressure elevated it for sure. But that’s not the argument, his ground kicking under pressure is average. Again, superstar and brilliant to watch but he’s not an elite kick and never has been.

he is ranked 1 for score assists i think.
in others words, his kicks mostly go where he wants them to.
    that's elite enough for me.

He’s ranked 18 for score assists and a score assist isn’t what you described.

He’s no 1 for score involvements which a completely different metric.

Either way he’s an absolute star and I love watching him.

Petracca is similar to Fyfe Dangerfield Naughton & a host of others in terms of kicking for goal. He is an ordinary set shot but ok on the run & some days are better than others.
He has learned to pace himself & turn the wick up when required. Gave The Bont a decent smack in the ear early in the game & surprisingly let go.
Got a smile like Ricciardo ....wouldn't be surprised if they are related.
Good luck to him....he clearly was the BOG....my boy Fritsch @41 ran a clear second.
