Looks like being one of the better overall editions of the Northam Stakes this year. Should be a great race.
I feel that the set weights and penalty conditions needs an overhaul though- there are some very highly rated horses that get in very well at the weights.

^^ that is what rodent has been talking about...

On weights and ratings it's the Rock Magic benefit race, but it never turns out that way......

These races always don't plan out as they "should".

Really liked the trial of Valour Road and is my top pick at this early stage

I think Carey called the start of the weight compression years back with what he used to call the “Marasco benefit races”. I’m sure he won multiple races that were 60kg maximum which is now 62kg with the weight rises overall.  I think Marasco had such a following they needed him to remain in WA so they changed the rules to suit

Saying that set weights and penalties is a different thing altogether so it’s actually different to what rodent is talking about.

they were not only benefits for Marasco i remember punters watching stunned into silence in tabs/pubs when he used to smash them carrying 60 vs their 53 or was it 54? #whattafillup...

Don't think it was Marasco. Pretty sure it was a Jim Taylor galloper who the SW-P races seemed "Taylor made for". The name escapes me though. I know it's tailor made but that'd be no fun.

They are called the Barakey stakes races, and they were probably introduced by the same dill that decided to make 78+ race quality handicaps.
Well I know who it was, that was responsible for the Barakey stakes races, and makes sense it is the same person responsible for 78+ qlty idiocy

Both designed to make it easy for the better horses at the expense of the rest, when the better horses don't need the assistance anyway.

Marasco was running in the Belmont feature races in 2008 with a rating of 115 and carrying 60kg, the Belmont sprint that year every other runner was on 53kg but should have been somewhere like 46kg on true handicap weights.  Barakey I think is who you were referring to was 2012/13 well after that

Yes, and that is when the SWP races were introduced.

Marasco would have been 60kg because that was the maximum top weight in a quality hcp in those days, so it is a different issue.
Quality hcps have been around forever......well not the 78+ ones haven't!

The SWP races AKA Barakey Stakes races were first introduced at Northam just in time for Barakey, and they are now in use in many other races.

It makes for lousy handicapping, and also just plain lazy handicapping.
    it's also very unfair.
If you want to give the best unfair advantage, just make them WFA and be done with it.

oh, and it did not work anyway.....barakey came fifth

2014 the sprint at northam was a hcp and won by Magnifisio
2015 it was the beginning of the SWP nonsense, and it all began for this race when won by Dawn Approach.

This is the field for 2015, checkout the weights and ratings.....It was to be the Barakey Gift, but unfortunately, somebody forgot to tell Barakey.

I just went looking for Marasco, and it did indeed race in some with 60kg and most of the rest on 53, after it had already won zillions in big races perth and melbourne
But the interesting thing is, that at least they handicapped from top down, rather than bottom up like they did in the diggers cup the other day.

The reason I mentioned Marasco was the complaining about Trap For fools and Come Play With Me having 62kg and Media Baron and Arctic Storm 61.5kg recently which is what The Falcon was referring to, I acknowledged the SWP races a different issue

Fair point about top down compared to bottom up handicapping
