R.I.P John Marshall

West Australian Racing
I have seen on social media this morning that WA jockey John Marshall has passed away.

He was born in WA and headed east to become a jockey. His father Jack Marshall rode in WA. John Marshall rode many good horses and was Bart's stable rider in the 80s and rode champion horse Beau Zam.

In 1999 it really was a WA flavour when Marshall teamed up with WA horse Rogan Josh to win the Melbourne Cup.

R.I.P mate.

I can not believe no one has even commented on this. We are talking about a Melboirne Cup winning jockey and a guy who was born in WA.

Surely you lot remember John Marshall as a great blole and a great jockey

Wow, very sad to read about John Marshall's passing. I rocked up at The Coast to play in a random midweek golf competition a couple of years ago and ended up in JM's group. I had a wonderful day talking with him about racing. I walked away thinking that he was a thorough gentleman and a credit to his family.
     RIP John.

John Marshall's Group 1 tally - see list below. So far my list is at 38 however I think its meant to be in the 40s mark so if anyone can assist at all with my list then that would be appreciated. I read that he rode in Hong Kong and Japan but couldn't find any Group 1 wins if he did win any. He was a champion bloke and a champion jockey.

Compare and contrast ......the ride of C Munce on Rogan Josh in the Caulfield Cup and the rides of J Marshall on Rogan Josh in the Mackinnon and Cup. I had a good result on the Cups double coming up and to this day can't hear the name Munce without spitting on the ground. My brother used to ride Rogan Josh's dam Elmhurst work through the bush at Margaret River for her trainer TA Tom Forrest....  Tom was the father of Rogan Josh's owner Wendy Green. Managed to salvage something from the doubles wreck with John Marshall aboard though.....always looked comfortable on a horse did John Marshall ...impeccable timing. Think he may have been indentured to Ray Saw of Lorna's Nuisance fame early on.
RIP John.....you inhabited rare air in the thoroughbred world.

Old Bart could really trust JM in my opinion..
JM would suddenly bob up as the rider of a Bart horse and would v often salute.
It is great to see the combination of high levels of competence in a person's field with high level of personality.

And that ride by Chris Munce on Rogan Josh in the Caulfield Cup....he went to the lead before the home turn and was over taken with about 150m to go and finished 4th. The ride was an impatient one.

Apologies....Eastern Mystique was a daughter of Elmhurst...it was a while ago.  Tom Forrest  used to do a good job with some of the mares on his brother Henry Forrests stud that had become non stud book eg Cherie Chantelle.
