Went to Bassendean Oval today and witnessed a good comeback by the Black Ducks. They were 40 points down just before half-time (courtesy of Perth's efficiency inside their forward 50, with the Demons scoring on every one of their first 16 inside-50s, kicking 12.4), however they kicked 12 of the last 13 goals in the game to win by 30 points.

Peel (after making 11 changes from last week) got up by 11 points over the Tigers at Claremont Oval.

Incredible stats @PAUL I was also at the game and without realising those numbers I did remark to a mate that every time Perth went forward they seemed to kick a goal whilst we had to work overtime for ours going forward but luckily footy is played over 4 quarters not 2.

In some ways, it was similar to last year's clash in R1 at Bassendean Oval. In that game, Perth also kicked eight goals in the first quarter (I think by memory they might of even kicked the first seven or eight), but the Black Ducks fought back to win by 12 points, with Xavier Ellis kicking four goals.

Up at work at the moment but managed to catch a bit of the Swans game on 7 mate.

I love when the camera pans around the ground, people scattered on the hill.... Can bar, Bursting at the seams :))

Do you mob get in the can bar? I watch a bit there, but much prefer the view from up in the members.
Bought a Premium membership this year but miss heaps of home games, think I'm there for the last 2. My Mother In-Law is enjoying the free entry while I'm away.

Nephew Jordy has played a few in the 2's this year. Missed out yesterday and he's lining up for Wongan Hills out at Gin Gin today... good coin too!

Yeah, it was the same thing I noticed watching the first half. When I checked the stats at H/T, Perth had only gone inside-50 17 times (and they didn't score on their last entry in), which meant they scored on every other entry inside-50. In any case, it did make for good viewing in the second half.

VK there was a game at Lathlain Park in 2014...had Perth ( slight favourites ) to complete a multi football bet that was worth um plenty.

Was at Lathlain Park... into time on Perth in complete control and 17 points in front...now could Swans kick three consecutive goals in about three minutes with the Lathlain grandstand rocking the Demons home ?

My ticket went from collect to confetti - the Black Ducks kicked the three goals and won by a point.

A tick over 2,500 at Bassendean Oval, not too bad...compares quite well to a GWS or Suns home game.
Give me Swans v Perth at Bassendean compared to Gold Coast v Geelong at Metricom anyday!

I think that game when he kicked the winning goal, was the year before in 2013.

    Cheers Paul.
There was another game around the same time where Brett Robinson kicked a 50m goal on the run in time on to win a game vs Perth at Lathlain Park as well.
We always seem to have some great battles vs the Demons especially at Lathlain Park.

Cheers Cisco, I believe Robbo did play there with a fellow former Swan Districts Premiership player in Wade Twomey before they came to Bassendean Oval with Tim Geappen who like Robbo was originally from Tasmania.
All were outstanding players for us and played in our 2010 flag side before Robbo & Twomey left for $ubiaco!

Thanks VK, Tim Geappen playing for University Blues in the VAFA over here.

Is the standard of the WAFL still very strong?

Yes it is mate it is the best football competition outside of the AFL.
The WAFL state side has easily defeated both the SAFL & VFL state sides both at home and away in the last 6 years whilst also pulverising (100 points +) the Tasmanian TSFL & the NEAFL during the same 6 year period and we were without some of our best players too who were unavailable to play.

VK Very underrated footballer Wade Twomey...saw him play an outstanding state game and think Swans dropped him not long after...or something went wrong there. Possibly a falling out...not sure now, but thought he was a great pick up for Subi at the time.

    Exactly VK.

I was so lucky to grow up in Bassendean from the early 70's when we moved from Kambalda.

Can remember seeing Billy Walker carving at Bassendean and a heap of other greats!

Swannys went through a pretty tough time in the late 70's.... I was playing 12's for Bassendean. Dippa (Danny Penny) was playing at Cloverdale... in the 12's.
We used to go to Basso... and away games if we could sneak a ride there.

The crowds at Basso dwindled into the low thousands (Classed a good crowd today). We'd sit up the back of the McDonald stand..... cheering and screaming SWANS FOREVER and stompin' our feet for every goal, even if we were 10 goals down, didn't matter.

Being around the place, early teens, building in to the 3 in a row. So good.

It built the Black & White for me for life, there could be no other.

    GO PIES.

The Swans Forever chant bellowing out from the McDonald Stand is synonymous with WA football to me it was great hearing it again and the matching foot stomping in the fading light at Steel Blue Basso Oval last Saturday.

Stan Nowonty was a terrific backman, tough as old boots...can't forget that kicking style..was a classic, but that was his natural way of kicking, did it make any difference to his performance ?
    Not an iota!

This weekend more money to be made on WAFL football....and lost of course.

Tigers v The Black Ducks - been sucked in again the Tigers at the +22.5 @$1.87
Peel v West Perth - no bet.
Perth v South Fremantle - no bet...was tempted on Perth +33.5 but pass.
Subiaco v Old Easts - will have a crack on this one and hope for rain - Old Easts +65.5 @$1.87.

Also a $10 all up on the four roughies to beat their respective lines in wet conditions.
    Tigers + 22.5
    Peel +19.5
    Demons +33.5
    Sharks +65.5
    All @$1.87 x 1.87 x 1.87 x 1.87 = $12.22

Talking of WAFL football betting can recall a game perhaps around 15-20 years ago whereby the Perth players heavily backed themselves to beat Claremont and help pay for their end of season trip. They duly got over the Tigers and collected the cash in an inspiring performance ( not surprisingly ).

In the days of course where gambling on a game by players was not prohibited like it is now. Was given a good write up in the 'West Australian' newspaper at the time.
For me good on the Perth players ( were underdogs ) for having a crack on themselves and collecting! Certainly had some incentive to do well.

    Tigers +22.5
    Peel +19.5
    Demons +33.5
    Sharks +65.5

The first three covered their lines comfortably (in fact all three ended up winning), but the Sharks, after a goalless first half, never looked like covering the line, eventually going down by 103 points.

    LADDER
    1 Subiaco 8-0
    2 South Fremantle 6-3
    3 West Perth 5-4
    4 Swan Districts 5-4
    5 East Perth 4-4
    6 Peel Thunder 4-5
    7 Claremont 3-6
    8 Perth 3-6
    9 East Fremantle 2-8

Seen this has happen before - South Fremantle - terrific Derby win on the Monday - flat as a tack on the Saturday. Major upset by the Demons.

West Perth - great win in the Perth Derby on the Monday - flat as a tack the following Saturday.

Sharks after the Derby well they were flat as a tack too. Then again they were pretty flat in the Derby too.
Take it one step further...the Black Ducks inspiring comeback over the Demons and a week later - yep, flat as a tack.

WAFL punters got it pretty right once again.
Subi firmed at the line - too easy for them.
Claremont heavily supported from + 22.5 into +18.5 - never in doubt.

Perth v South not much change.
West Perth though very well backed in betting and a dissapointing loss for them.

WAFL tradition of upsets - alive and well. Good on them.
  • VillageKidVillageKid    2,358 posts
Considering Swans absolutely poor record at Claremont (both Oval & Showgrounds) it was no real great upset. Before yesterday I dont think we had won a game in any of the 3 grades there since 2013!
  • PAULPAUL    2,665 posts

Not really an upset. I didn't include the three losses they had at the Showgrounds (2014, 2015 and 2016) in the stats preview. When you factor those in too, the Black Ducks have now lost their last 6 in Claremont (have only won 1 of the last 8). As VK mentioned, you would have to go back to R17 2013 for when they last won there (by 39 points), Tony Notte kicked 5 goals.

Two bets for this round and all up on the two of them.
East Perth @+58.5 @$1.87 v Subiaco all onto South Fremantle to win @$1.50 for a return of $2.80.

Claremont v West Perth - too hard!
Perth v East Freo - perhaps the Sharks at +18.5 but pass on that.

The Cardies over Claremont by a solitary point!
    Demons overpower the Sharks comfortably.

South far too good for Peel.
The bet of the century East Perth at an amazing line of +58.5...never in doubt and yes easier than government work! How they came up with a 58.5 line for that game remarkable. Was backed before bounce down into a 56.5 head start for the Blue and Blacks.

South Fremantle Bulldogs heavily supported to win from $1.50 into $1.38. Never going to lose.
