Peel Thunder losing to Swans and Perth Demons in consecutive weeks :-O and South Fremantle a little indifferent to start the season and East Perth also.

Subiaco are $2.50 to win the premiership, there $1.01 to be one of the two teams in it so $2.50 dosent look a bad price.

Before the season I got it from a good source that Subi were a chance to start relatively slowly as the team gels and a few guys were late back to training coming of injuries. wait a month or so and then get on them for the flag when they get out in the market he said.

Hate to see what happens when they hit their straps!!

Thought that was a reasonable Claremont team on paper and a chance to at least beat the line the bookies set. Weren't within a a tigers roar of even getting close to the line.

To think VK the only two teams with the roughest of the rough chance to topple them on Grand Final day would still be the two alignment teams, and only if things happened to fall into place for them with selection.

That leaves South Fremantle - hot and cold at the best of times. Subi have already demolished them by about 10 goals a few weeks ago.

Tomorrow South Fremantle only 1.5 points line favourite over the Sharks. Thought South would be a lot shorter.

Swans 18.5 line favourites..give the Cardinals a chance of keeping it under 18.5.

East Perth also just 5.5 line favourites over the Redlegs...gees that's not much thought East Perth would be much shorter. Last time they met Royals were about 11 goal favourites and lost the game by a kick!

Will go all up at the lines.

If Perth defeat East Perth then the Demons will be entrenched in the top five - finals territory. Could we be witnessing a Demon revival and possibly a Subiaco v Perth Grand Final ?

Lions would be shuddering at the thought. Demons to do a Leicester City >:)

VK were you surprised that in the East Perth V Perth game that bookmakers set the line at only 5.5 points ?
Despite Perths small improvement so far, it was a strong East Perth team with excellent Eagles representation plus Sharrod Wellingham who's been in great form. Early on it was 8 goals to 2 and game over.

Also Swans v West Perth..they set that line at 18.5 and the Black Ducks were a crazy $1.33. Subi kicked 18 of the last 19 goals against Swans and West Perth ran a good South Fremantle team right to the wire.

The Bulldogs line was never in doubt today, the Bulldogs winning easily 132-38. The game was effectively over just after quarter time. If SF had kicked straighter at goals (18.24), the margin could have been much bigger. The Sharks only managing 19 inside-50s for the match, compared to 71 for the Bulldogs.

Yes another line that seemed way out of kilter, South Fremantle definetly top four material, possibly could go as high as second if injury free and Sharks will be surprised if they finish top 5.

Line was just 1.5 and from the word go it was a shellacking.

Great previews Riders and Paul on the money watched South and East yesterday the Sharks showed nothing South were back to last years form minus Tim Kelly huge loss there Suban is handy but not Kelly. Also Saunders looks down on form this year need him fit and firing to challenge for the flag.

If South can get all these guns going well they can at least give Subi a run ( possibly ). Got a lot of time for Schloite, Suban, Pickett, Shaw, Wilson, Hams, Saunders.

Blayne Wilson was a very handy pick up from the Eagles a few years ago. If not quite up to AFL he's an outstanding WAFL defender. Ashton Hams too, good footballer. Haiden Schloite every time see him he's dominating. Tim Kelly would be handy!! Think Mason Shaw has a ton of ability.

I'm getting a little keen on South, but they can dissapoint too. Watch this space!

SF are a very good side Riders but $ubi have had their measure for a while now.

As I said in the pre season the Top 4 was set ($ubiaco, SF, Peel-Fremantle, EP-WCE) and the rest will be fighting it out just to finish 5th and have seen nothing 4 rounds in to change my mind.

Subi can absorb player losses and retirements like no other club! Recall when George Hampson left the Lions and became a Shark in 2015. He was outstanding in the 2014 GF when the Lions defeated the Royals in an upset by 16 points.

Thought he will be a pretty big loss for them, but not even a blimp on the radar. He's done ok at the Sharks when able to get on the park due to injuries.

Most Subi/South games in recent times all one way traffic, has been on the whole the Lions comfortably. South need to rise to the occasion next time they meet.

Recall when Claremont recently were very dominant for awhile and now Subiaco. It's ironic that they had the smallest following in the WAFL before 1987 ( Eagles first year ) and probably still do.

The two Fremantle teams always had a good following, East and West Perth likewise, Swans built up a great following, then back to Perth, Subi and Claremont probably in numbers the smallest followings.

Subiaco always had the smallest following in the heyday of the WAFL, Claremont slightly more especially in that 1980s era where they were a top quality side.

VK can you remember the first year of the Eagles in 87 and how WAFL teams were decimated but that Claremont team has to be one of the best WAFL teams ever. Saw them demolish the Royals three rounds in a row. The Tigers were a machine.

Gerard Neesham was playing coach and he just directed them, that's not saying he couldn't play he was an outstanding footballer, even if was a player you just loved to hate haha. They may have had youngsters Ben Allan and Don Pyke in the team. They definetly had Peter Thorne and Derek Kickett think Warren Ralph too. Stephen Golding, Peter Melesso, O'Connell brothers. They were almost unbeatable and bolted the premiership in by about 60 points...over who ? Subiaco of course.

That was the year Derek Kickett polled 46 votes in the Sandover Medal but ineligible due to suspension.

Second last game of the season VK the Tigers defeated East Perth 33.28 to 8.9. The Royals had never been off the bottom of the ladder for the whole year. Going into the final game they were given no chance against top four team East Fremantle especially after the debacle of the week before.

Upset of the century, Perth Oval grandstand was rocking again and East Perth for the first time all year were off the bottom, handing the wooden spoon to the under achieving South Fremantle.

There was a funny game earlier in the year against Claremont, the Royals last were giving the ladder leading Tigers a huge run for their money. Final Quarter Claremont 11.9 East Perth 0.1 it was a shellacking.

That 87 Claremont side was a good one alright Riders as was the 91 side who after losing to us at Basso in round 1 by a small margin I don’t think they lost another game for the rest of the year.
The best Claremont side I saw though was the 1981 side which was all class and did they kick some big scores that year with Warren Ralph, Steve Malaxos, Brett Farmer, Jim Krakouer, Phil Krakouer and I think Graham Moss all kicking over 50 goals that season with Ralph kicking 127 or so.

In 87 just one loss for the Tigers and that was to West Perth and a draw against there eventual grand final opponents Subiaco. Went 21 straight games without a loss. Tony Beers was another very good footballer they had. Stephen Golding played some games for North Melbourne.

Can only just remember Chris Allen returning to East Perth from Swans and he was captain that year. Derek Kickett was a former West Perth player, think was cleared to Claremont in 1986.

Hello Boys,

The WAFL in that era must have been huge. Had a look at you tube at the 1986 WAFL Grand Final massive crowd and fantastic atmosphere. Riders I remember Gerard Neesham playing over here for South Melbourne but I am interested in your 'love to hate' comment. Glad you mentioned Peter Melesso, who also played at South Melbourne, as his football career was cut down by cancer but I am pleased to say that he is still going as strong as ever. Apparently Peter kicked nine goals in a half of football does anybody remember this game?

Hi Cisco yes Big Melesso did kick 9 in a half (1st half) from memory in the 1988 2nd Semi Final vs Subiaco.

He had a unique record of having a shot at goal after the siren to either win or draw games in the WAFL 3 times in fact.

Took a hanger in one of his games for WCE at Victoria Park vs Collingwood.

The WAFL was massive over here in WA before the WCE came on the scene (and subsequently Freo) although that game you speak of the 1986 WAFL GF was actually the smallest crowd at a WAFL GF for nearly 30 years (1958) which may have been because Subiaco were playing in it and they have the smallest supporter base in the traditional WAFL.

The crowds during the 1960s, 1970s & 1980s were massive considering Perth's population at the time wasnt even near 1 million let alone the 2 we have now.

The late 70s early 80s were a dynamic era of footy over here and the stars of the day were greats the likes of Michael, Hardie, Monteath, Rioli, Vigona, Carter, Winmar, J & P. Krakouer, Moss, Ralph, Malaxos, Mitchell, Hunter, Ditchburn, Blackwell, Beasley, Neesham, Melrose, P & K. Narkle, Richardson, G & A. Sidebottom, Baker, Boucher, Cable, Spencer, Millar, Otway, Kelly, Ironmonger, Bosustow, Wiley, Cousins, Couper, Johnson, B & J. Duckworth, Fong, Menaglio, Gibbs, C & D. Bewick, Taylor, Peake, Sewell, Green, Buhagiar, Purser, Wrensted, Judge, Buckenara, Keene, Lamb, Featherby, Taylor amongst many many others that were household names both here and eventually in Vic.

@VillageKid beat me to it, it was in the 1988 second Semi-Final v Subiaco at Subiaco Oval. I knew he kicked nine goals in that game but couldn't recall if they were all in the first half or not, but since Claremont kicked 17 of their 22 goals in the first half, it was quite possible. I'm glad someone remembers.

In that semi-final, Claremont led by 62 points at Q/T (70-8) and by 70 at H/T (107-37). They ended up winning by 25 points, 22.12 (144) to 17.17 (119). Lost the grand final a fortnight later by 62 points, Subiaco kicking 9 goals to 3 in the final quarter.

Many thanks VK I followed South Melbourne in the VFL over here but when they went to Sydney I gave them away but I still have a soft spot for them.

I would be interested in your thoughts VK or anyone else was the introduction of the Eagles good for WA footy from a WAFL perspective?

Definitely not good for the WAFL Cis as the late great George Grljusich perfectly summed up before his passing essentially before 1987 & then made even worse in 1995 you had 8 elite state based clubs and now we have 2 as all the money and support goes to the WCE & Freo and the WAFL despite being the second best comp in the country behind the AFL it is having to survive on chook raffles which was not the reason the WCE were formed in the first place!

To be honest football nowadays is not even half of the game I grew up watching in the 70s, 80s & 90s today it is a sanitised boring version of it despite what those with a vested interest in the media coverage will tell you it aint as good a game anymore!

TBH I dont even follow an AFL team I just watch it now to see how the Swan Districts boys (Naitanui, Walters, Rance, Garlett, Jetta, Cameron, Coniglio, Lobb, Broad, Blakely etc) are going.
