Had a leading reinsman say to me years ago......" We can't get a quid punting on the horses in my stable....they are all unders when I drive them. I was better off when everyone thought I was a mug....paid for my place with one win....now punters think I am a decent driver.....no hope of getting a decent price"
I agree with you STG....wherever the pool of drivers has reduced to small numbers of professionals the temptation to transgress and organise themselves to run a rort seems to overwhelm some of them.
In this game as long as you are competent in handling the horse and safe there is no reason you shouldn't be able to go around..it adds to the mix as others have said and you have to factor that into your punt.

Hobby drivers are ok if they competent - my gripe is that some of them aernt - and ive quoted a few examples recently - where it has been dangerous

As for not getting a price when you put on a top line reinsman - Shannon S  knocks that theory on the head - look at the odds of his winners/placegetters - some pretty good cricket batting averages in their

Paleface Adios - won a stack of races - however its trainer/driver - Colin Pike  he would be classed as part time/hobby - and he was a very ordinary driver

If Brian Hancock had driven it throughout its career - i reckon it would have won 5 more Group 1s ( it missed out on alot of the big plums

One night at HP it started at 2/5 - and after it won ( and it was a miracle win ) they hurled abuse at Pike ( should have won by 20 metres - got a flukey late split and won by half a neck )-  it was an incredibly ordinary drive - by someone who is not race hardened

I see at Williams today Leo Wallrodt is back driving Beware of Darkness - it will be interesting how it goes -  DeCampo gets sacked off it for winning - hes got other drives their today.

paleface adios  just alone his inters campaigns  bit different to nowadays  he was on hcp.marks.against  the best horses  in Australia... Hard to fathom he along with village kid have won the most heats (8),, more then four time inters winner blacks a fake won, only if had started off the front in any  inters in which he had hcps of 15m marko reckon you would have got him home rarely he didn't lead and win from the front line ,...Not saying c.pike was as good as  b.hancock. gee mark him pretty high on the job training and driving him ,just the longevity  nine years at the caper 108 wins the  not bad for a bushie.

Their is actually a statue of him in Temora

Unique horse - probably him and Gunsynd are the only 2 horses who have really captured the rank and file public - re race followers

Palefaces last start - ( ive read about it - and seen videos ) won the Cranbourne Cup - on a Mondday ( working day ) and their was a huge crowd - folklore type stuff

Great horses Paleface and Gunsynd...but I would have thought Phar Lap and Mount Eden had a fair following....and many many more that captured both the racing and non racing public's hearts. Never seen anything quite like the crowd and atmosphere at Pure Steel's match race with Satinover. Pretty selective to limit it to just two but perhaps you were limiting it to NSW horses.

@JayJay - did Riri Rihanna pull up ok? Never nice to see a horse go wrong during a race.

Yes, all okay thanks @squid69 .....she started to pull really hard in front, choked down, cut off her air and Shannon felt her get the wobbles, immediately pulled her infield so she didn't cause huge trouble at the front of the field. Very grateful to have a very experienced driver who recognised what was happening and acted accordingly. ....thank goodness there is no longer a running rail. She was fine immediately after the race, so some gear adjustments and a trial coming up. She is only a tiny little horse, one of the smallest going around but she can fire up on the chewy at times.

    KTQ said:

I thought Jack Mac was being set for the NSW Derby but I see he is not named in any of the 3 x Heats tonight at Menangle?

He was. Missed the Caduceus Friday too. Barry was in NZ for yearling sales and didn't trust putting him in another trainer's care for the heat. Plus, it's bloody hard logistics wise for a hobby trainer to ship a horse across the country and keep it accommodated, trained and fed without knowing people, knowing the infrastructure etc. Knowing us, we'd book a stable near Tabcorp Melton and the race would be at Tabcorp Menangle :( :)

He'll have to beat them another time haha
    <:-P \:D/
That is good news @KTQ as there was a concern he may have gone amiss. I hope it was incorrect as he is a very exciting 3yo.

I like having hobby drivers, can make for a more interesting race rather than a procession. Better to have more people participate in the game than not, otherwise just left to the big boys to control.

It has been great to see the likes of long time battler hobby trainer/drivers Ciuppa & Filardo winning races over the last 3 days at Northam & GP at big odds.

Just goes to show if you are serious about winning on the punt you MUST have a TAB.Com account

Collie today - the local product - yet Tab Touch aernt betting fixed odds on it - but TAB.Com are

And i was going to post a week or so and list the prices - with the interstate trotting  - in 99% of time - with every horse in every race  - they are unders in comparism with TAB.Com

    If it is $51 TAB/Com - its $41 TT - if its $23 - its $19 - if its $9 - then they have got it at $7.50

The only time they are over - if the fave is $1.26 - they will you $1.27 - lol

Worst tote in Aust - proving it in spades today - betting fixed odds on Devenport - but not the local product

$!7.60 available Lisdelight and in a 7 horse field with some out of contention backmarkers, that was way overs and a handsome return was had. Also Lauren Jones horse in race 2 Combat Crusade....looked an absolute treat pre race, superbly presented...checked Bet 365 fixed $1.70, no fixed on course, so had a go when it was showing $4.20 just before they jumped, knew it would shorten, and it did but very happy with $2.70 from barrier 1...crikey, it paid a generous $1.50 the place. So, a quid to be made even if it was hard work (in I might add extremely steamy humid conditions after a downpour prior to the first  which threw things in doubt for a short while.Very glad I went, top crowd as usual and extremely competitive racing.

Trot nine Devonport    driver      ----   Hannah van Dongen  locks wheels going going somehow stays in the bike and finishs up winning the race. woth a look.

Day out at Collie for Mean Dean Miller too JJ.
Combat Crusade was a good thing with its gate speed I thought...something very small.
Wasn't concentrating and had the finger on the confirm bet button when my small Lisdelight punt was scuppered......crazy price for a horse that sticks and had a 1 win 1 place record at Collie. The $300 plus tri was ridiculous given the handicaps.
On tv the first bend provided more dust than the Cavalier Hill motocross in Kalgoorlie....but that wasn't a major issue.

Matt has some record in the King Coal Cup...5 in a row....2014 Turbo Gold for C.Voak, 2015 Zamaye ...Matt drove, Telham Lane 2nd for Voak, 2016 Telham Lane (Voak), Lisdelight 2nd (Matt), 2017 Telham Lane for Voak again and 2018 Lisdelight for Morgan with Telham Lane 3rd.

Lisdelight ran a couple of really good 4ths in town over 2500m running on from the back, so 2700m and a small filed, smaller after Rum Delight galloped out.and...well glad someone agrees with me, $17.60 fixed was a stupid price.. Dust blew up later in the meeting but when i first got there, there were puddles all over the place, then the sun came out and we were like stewed plums. I washed down Telham Lane and enjoyed the cold water as much as he did. What a terrific little horse he has been...won 19 races and over $142k and he is just  a little pony who tries his heart out, year after year, and a total gentleman to boot.

Lisdelight ( good luck to the punters who backed it )

Fixed Odds - final price TAB.Com   ( dont know if it was its best price because i was out )  $23 Win $7.80 place

Only 6k in tote win pool - take the tax out - have $100 a win on it - and the $17.60 gets crunched - have $200 - and it pays single figures

With TAB.Com - with so called outsiders - say upwords of 15 or perhaps 20 to 1 - they will normally  let you on to win 8 or 9k no problem

No worries Jum, I did a few km's yesterday in the "sauna" between Matt's stalls and the collect window haha. You reckon that bloke with Ice Cream van doesn't know a thing or two about "strategic positioning".....on a stinker of a day, it's very hard to miss him in transit. Great racing yesterday, you would have thought there were a couple of sheep stations on the line in some races.Fantastic grass roots meetings, I'll be at all of their meetings, hopefully with a runner or two at the next one.

Fair comment Chariots. With all the rumors circulating and with the constant innuendo I would have thought someone, especially RWWA would have been on the front foot and proactive. If nothing else come out in support of the stewards and the investigator and calling for people to respect the process.
Instead they have buried their head in the sand and pretended nothing has happened and hoping it gets swept under the carpet.

  • Tabtadio discussing the case that got Barbara in trouble tomorrow morning. No doubt it will be plsyed down and the investigstors involvment denied by RWWA.
