It was around 1999 - 2001 races such as the Towton Cup, Tattersalls Cup and Perth Cup were actually increased in field size to accomodate 18 runners...plus emergencies.

A decade and a half ago horses were in competition to gain a Perth Cup start, now it's more a case of will there be a third dividend ?

some would hope the Van Heemst falls off the programme completely. Maybe its getting its kama.

The Perth Cup is a trap for fools b-( ...the two favourites Pounamu and Material Man who like a lot, were 25/1 and 40/1 respectively at their last start...that was the time to be on those two guys.

If and it's a 66/1 if...but if Dark Musket can get back to the type of form two years ago when placed in a Kingston Town and a terrific fourth in the Perth Cup behind Delicacy he will pick this lot up and carry them!

However if he's not back to that form..they will carry him..and still beat him home!

His last two runs much improved, another good run and will come into 20/1.

Note to self: Buy a five year old that is just not quite up to Group 2 or 3 Autumn races in the eastern states - give to Puffer or Adam or similar to aim for the feature races POST the Masters. Any one interested in forming a syndicate to say $50,000.

When you look at it...what you need is a Pounamu - Material Man type...both excellent in the 1600 metre Railway Stakes ( 5th and 6th ) then run 1,2 at weight for age in 1800 metre Kingston Town, now second and third favourites for a 2400 metre Perth Cup. That's versatile!

Also proves if your more than handy their is stakemoney to be won on your home ground.

Name me one tried horse to come West to one of the trainers who work in heavy sand, ie: Durrant, Williams, etc, and win a good staying race over here.

The race you can still call it by its traditional true name - the C.B. Cox Stakes. Call it that all the time. Always will. Hell I still call Geelongs home ground Kardinia Park.

Article from The Australian by Tom Percy from 2012

    http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/how-perth-cup-lost-its-way/news-story/34800b91d7ad04ec24677f01e5d2426e

Harness Racing may not be at the pinnacle it once was but by comparison, it's flying high comparedto the gallops. With Lazarus staying over for the Fremantle and Pacing Cups, it may well put the Perth Cup into a very poor reflection of what it once was. Very sad situation....a race I always attended or conducted the New Years Day sweep at home but its hard to get excited enough to even have a bet or listen too.

Quote taken from The Age newspaper May 13th 2008 from Perth Racing Chief Executive regarding the reduction in distance of the Perth Cup.

'If we didn't do something to try and attract a better class of horse for the race it will soon be a Group 3 and drop right off the radar.'

yes, but that was before mr malpass started waving his magic wand

last year's was a true group 2 with one wave only!

he might have to wave it twice this year; but never mind, he will manage it for sure.
in all my time following racing, i have never known anybody so deft at turning fouth and fith rate races into true high quality stakes races.
you can read all about it in the appropriate monthly calendar(september i think)

the cox stakes this saturday, will probably need 3 waves of his wand, but never fear, it will be a true group 2 at some stage.

Good old grey Lottila Bay won the Perth Cup for Alan Mathews and Pat Carbery as a ten year old. Not sure if he's still going, but he was with us at the end of last year at the good age of 26!

Mathews - Carbery - Pounamu this Cup. This fellow also happens to be a grey. The stars are aligning.

Pounamu might be one yet... must be a query at the perth cup trip though?
I guess we'll find out Saturday if it can stay.

Just had another look at his Railway Stakes run...15th on the corner flashing home to run 6th beaten under two lengths...was the run of the race in the Railway...weight for age put punters off in the KT but outside of a 'tired' Black Heart Bart who were the genuine weight for age horses ?

Gees the 20/1 - 25/1 with that wonderful thing called hindsight was a remarkable price.

However the distance remains a little query with me too. If he gets over the top of them Saturday will come into a clear cut favourite.

I still think Trap for Fools will go round in one and not the other (ATA or Van Heemst).
I just reckon LIndsey will make up his mind tomorrow morning.
Can anyone see him going around in both?
