since this guy has had the reigns there has been 7698.5 changes & non of them for the better. if the joint was going well there would have been no need to change anything, but instead, it's one dopey move after another.
but to have omwly year for 3yo's is....,well it is. =)) and i have just noticed that the 1mw 3yo on a saturday is scaled the same as 0mwly 3yo for half the money of a midweek. that is seriously ridiculous, but nothing new. and they are scaled .5kg higher than present!! i can't wait to see the new template. no wonder the joint is stuffed.
News to me the joint is stuffed. Record stakes increases recently announced from memory ?
yes, but your'e parochial. my memory was that 2008 had more prize per meeting than 2015 for midweek, as for the rest maybe, maybe not. how about ratio wise compared to say melbourne? it's irrelevant to me anyway. as for saturdays, wa no longer has them, they are dumbed down so much they are simply glorified midweeks.
anyway, it's the handicapping that is stuffed, and i am nowhere near alone thinking that.
carey, we all know the handicapping is stuffed but why is there not a hue and cry about it from waroa, trainers assn. etc?
maybe they don't feel confident taking him to task at it, as they probably don't understand handicapping when they are busy with other matters.
i have no such issues, as i have to understand it as part of what i do(did), so therefore i study it intensely. and i don't have to please anybody so can say what i want. my friend from nsw, that has the ear of official handicappers has admonished me for this, as he reckons diplomacy is better, but tact is not my strong point.
anyway how can you possibly have a 3yo 1mw for 42.5k scaled exactly the same as a 3yo omwly for 22.5k, it is patently nonsense same as the 60+ on saturday, midweek and provincial for wildly different prize being scaled the same.
the old time handicappers that knew the meaning of the word would be apoplectic if they were still kicking.
cant find the document however it is tied in with the stakes increases. They are worried about small field sizes and therefore the roll on effect it has on wagering.
It was contained in the release when the stakes increases were announced
Apparently there is to be extensive industry consultation in the period leading up to implementation on 1 Feb
jog my memory guys...maiden, novice, advance, purse....in other words they progressed themselves up...or down. the welter the last...why in the pharque did they change that? second leg of the daily dub. we are being dictated to by cretins.... X(
:x:x The 'Ole' Welter. Knee high to a grasshopper when they were last run. They were the days. Nanna would let me have 50 cents eachway in the last 2 races.

Carey I have no problem with you criticising handicapping in WA as you are obviously an expert in the area and have devoted a life time to it.
I do take exception to sweeping statement like "the joint is stuffed" when the facts do not support this.
You mention ratio wise comparisons to Victoria and I provide the following table:
Vic Population 5.8m Base Stake $80k NSW Population 7.5m Base Stake $85k Pro rata to Vic $103k QLD Population 4.7m Base Stake $65k Pro rata to Vic $64.8k WA Population 2.5m Base Stake $50k Pro rata to Vic $35.2m SA Population 1.6m Base Stake $40k Pro rate to Vic $23.4
There are many other variables regarding stake money but the above tables broadly indicate that WA and SA are punching well above their weight.
Forums such as these attract people that want to have a say and invariably have a negative point of few and that is fine but surely there must be a few positives out there.
We lost one set of trials and everyone from the Minister, Perth Racing and the RWWA Board should be sacked.
Not a mention of the meeting carnage on the eastern seaboard this winter where countless meetings have been lost.
Any way I am off to golf and on the assumption that I will play poorly on a "Heavy 7" I will lay the blame firmly at the feet of Perth Racing and RWWA.
basically everything i say is with self interest attached. and there is not one shred of doubt your handicapper is out of his depth, OR/AND his other roll is incompatible with handicapping.
as for the positives, i am sure i have mentioned them over the years, but you just forgot them! these days it is hard to get enthused by racing that has been continuously downgraded by your powers that be, so that the usual tops these days is little more than a class 6 of the old days. of course the prize for these nothing races is big, but crikey, how can one get excited by the same nothingness day after day, week after week? no wonder i took up beach walking, it''s much more exciting!
your problem is that you think i am just set against wa, but your'e wrong, it's simply because wa is the ONLY place i look at in australia these days.
FM that is assuming you are correct in comparing stake money to population. Im not sure that is the correct way to compare the states? It would be more accurate to work out the amount of money invested by owners vs stakemoney. Might work out the same, but might not aswell.
and a welter as the last race of the day can only hope @Rodent\:D/
wa had 'welters' on the same minimum as opens and whatever. so were they really 'welters'? everywhere else had higher minimums, unless wa had them before i took interest in the place.
usually about 3kg higher minimum, and then there was the highweights with another 3kg higher minimum. welters and highweights were super betting mediums i thought.

WA had welters from before I was born, I have no idea what other states had, as a kid you would see a top handicapper get 9.8 in a welter then maybe a 2 y/o or 3 y/o would get in with 7.6.. The handicapper more often than not got it right.

that's an overstatement pb, but it does make a mockery of handicapping these days where they are too scared to give them any weight relatively(everything is compressed) the 'handicapper' would probably get it right more often than in previous years, because of that fear. in other words, the best meet the worst on more favourable terms than they used to.

Carey my reference to the cancelled trials was not directed at you but was the subject of another thread and I could not bother writing two posts.
Stake money and distribution are very subjective with many variables but the point I was making on population is that is the available market for the wagering dollar in each state and Vic and NSW have a distinct advantage in this area.
Diva, I am not sure that Fastmoney would be happy taking credit for my views as we have not always agreed in the past. :\">
i thought you must have had a cracker you were so quick!
and i never brought up the prize money either...tivers did. but i could remember checking just the other day where the midweeks were less than 2008 levels, and i noted too that there was plenty of 60k race saturdays way back when. i can also remember the stakes drop so they could not have been going too well. in fact i would reckon that was the motivation for all those crap races creeping in on saturdays, they could give less money for those rotten races. but really prize money is not my area of interest. what i want is handicappers to handicap and thus make the races much more competitive.

@thoroheadsWA Main reason is SW+P 3YO races the pens not cumulative so creates situation of free hit for Sat winner to drop back to a mwk.
David Hunter @DavidHunter_27 4m4 minutes ago
@thoroheadsWA The 3yo 1MW races on Sat still allow winners of only one Sat race opportunity to avoid 3YO open races and race in a hcp.

To what they are changing I have not heard - hopefully reintroduce the class system
And if its a positive change why wait 6 months?
