Connections of today's Emirates Stakes' runner-up Smokin' Joey at
Flemington paid the $22,000 late entry fee to have the horse included
    into the Railway field.

Longport has come up $6 favourite probably fair enough would be a better horse than the one of Tinkler's that led all the way a few years back? They paid big money for her she looks about the right level for over here. Couldnt get excited about Smokin Joey's chances is going well but put him on my sacked list a few years back Strike The Stars would be my pick but wouldn't be sure of him coming.

It could be a group 1 double for Rob Heathcote with Fire Up Fifi(Railway) & Buffering(Winterbottom). Fire Up Fifi beat Conservatorium over the mile over the Brisbane Winter carnival and has at the very least, held that form. Whereas Conservatorium has probably dropped a bit-yet was still able to win the Lee Steere Stakes yesterday, albeit narrowly. FUF should be able to take a prominent position also, which has been advantageous in recent editions of the race.

Agree FUF would be a great chance but doubt she could run down Longport if it found the front easily she was beaten a few lengths by Catkins in the Myer Stakes and would rate Longport similar. Wish they were bringing Catkins here a very game mare.

Yeah, no doubt Longport was impressive-leading all the way at Flemington is not easy. Barriers will be crucial-she wouldn't want to be drawing wide at Ascot. If Nash comes across, it would be a bonus too. Missing the cup winning ride seems to have sparked him up a bit. I just hope he doesn't have to survive a protest? He got a bit lost for words yesterday and not for the first time, either

Is Mr Moet any chance of a run in the Railway?

I think Smokin Joey's last 2 runs have been huge, I def give him a sniff of winning

imo, if they start him, bondy, i reckon it could stuff him.

he has done his best in the highest standard...time for a rest.

personally, i would have left him in victoria as there is very, very little for him here....bugger al in fact.

Well Rohan's farked now - has to win to get in. 5 unforseens (new ES noms or original noms that realistically wouldn't come) in front of him. He's gotta hope horses like Talent Show and Pop Culture wisely choose a suitable race on their staying path instead of being a number here.

RJ Peters gives you an exemption, or it used to.

Yep, thats what I meant needs to win to get in.

he's a derby winner, 2 cracker runs after a injury spell, how in the hell he isn't an automatic acceptor has me stunned.

    lets hope discretionary handicapping prevails.

    It's nonsense.

I understand the ratings basis, but how on earth does a horse like Vermeer or Pin Rouge, in general a Saturday horse - but also a winner of a listed provincial race, get OOE preference over a Derby and dual LR 3yo winner.  Nothing against those two, but the detriment of this ratings system knows no bounds IMO.

The basis for OOE wrong. Handicappers should have the balls to do feature OOEs manually and justify why - like Carpenter does for the Cups.

And same thing will happen in Perth Cup this year, same as every other year. Out of form spuds who had high rating once (and have never come down - system refuses to do it), will clog field keeping horses who can actually win out of it.

Its a double edged sword -

3yr old listed and group races don't attract the weight penalties ( ratings points).

2 listed and a Gr2 as a 4 yr old and he would probably have a rating of around 102, 103 minimum and would have carried 59 to 60 kgs in both of his races this time in.

[-X cant have it both ways.

And clearly states that this is a provisional order of entry with any discretionary balloting to be done after final declarations

Platinum Rocker is well in with just 53kg. I didn't really like the lead up form but the Asian Beau has a clear history of throwing winners of the Railway and the horse is a proven winner who races forward. Might be the best of the local hopes?

Agree strawbs very good horse and his two runs back have been excellent, I think he's a serious chance in all the big three races being the Railway, Kingston Town and cup

Will the entertainment bring anyone over 25 to the track ? I know I am getting old, but this bloke I have never heard of.

He plays records and they class that as talent these days ? That is one step removed from the boy who sets up the extension cord to plug in the gramophone.

Beats the shit out of 'Dj" Havana Brown. I'm excited about the day's racing and watching Illy afterwards adds value to the $35

Not sure if Grand Nirvana is the ilk of animal I was talking bout...

Buddy - what odds you giving me that it gets used properly - only calls made will be on two or more on same rating.

There is that word again . . .

i'm sure i'll still think illy is a dilly, but will probably still fill up time till i move in the silly traffic liine and listen to illy, watch the fillies and confirm he's a dill....haha

but i don't think i am the target audience?? And after supporting racing in Perth for the majority of the year why would they go our of their way on our biggest day of the year and provide entertainment that would reward us for that...Lot more important to make sure the 2 or 3 times a year individuals are entertained!!!!! Most of who will be too pissed to appreciate it, but am sure that wont matter.

My 28yr old son is into a lot of alternative music..he said WHO?????
