I happen to be a part owner of a very capable town
Classed horse. It won a race on a prime metropolitan
Meeting the other week. Following the win I caught up with the jockey post race and slung him 1000$ as I was very successful on the punt.

There are 6 owners in the horse an I am the only one who ever slings the jockey. do you think that instead of me always slinging the jock everyone involved in the said horse should pitch in 100-150$ ??

    you bet..any horse i manage the sling comes out of the prize money before it is divvied up...not that we have slings of course..but you know what i mean, and i know what you mean... ;)

    Yeah sounds about right.....Slings are pretty rare these days! Look after the stable staff and trainer before the jockey! ;)

    i did know a trainer who banned his owners from slinging the jocks. He said they earned way too much anyway and to sling the strapper instead!

    I like that thought paraletic! Being a lowly stablehand, who does all the work behind the scenes, I can tell you very little money trickles down our way! Jock gets paid for the ride regardless, strapper lucky to get a thank-you for the strap! Reckon it's about time the s**t kickers who work with the horses every day and know them top to bottom and nose to arse get some recognition. Industry pretty much stops without us! ;)

    As for OP. Absolutely all owners should cough up for any sling! Not fair on you!

    Slings can get so tricky.. as an owner of a three time midweek winner at high odds we gave the jock $300 and the stable $200 to divvy up. The raceday strapper got a decent amount too (he only dealt with the horse on raceday). Personally I think with the excitment of a win its easy to get too generous with the jock, it didnt buy his loyalty when the horse ran a shocker, and losing the jock cost us at least one win and a place after that.

    But if I was lucky enough to have a great horse like Mabel Grace as an example, I dont think the numbers should be proportionly much more. The jock is lucky to have that kind of ride and getting a huge reward on top of his prizemoney seems unfair to the other people behind the scenes who keep our horses happy and pay the bills.

    I know of another scenario, the owner pays an annual dividend or bonus to all of his regular staff.

    I'm told that major stables actually have an agreement in place for staff that is deducted from winnings as a standard bonus and that owners are aware of this requirement when their horse enters the stable.

    What about the barrier attendants? Do they ever receive any monetary tips?

    On that subject...... I presume the blokes that take on that job are connected to stables? Are there any female barrier attendants? I don't recall seeing one.

    Severedheads, the fair thing to do would be to sling the jock YOUR % SHARE of what you think he should get. Owners and trainers can be pretty firm in their opinions about slinging, for and against. Getting the other owners to cough up what you think is fair every time would be a pain in the neck for you.

    We have 20% of a promising horse that ran sat. If the jock had managed to get her home at the huge odds he would have deserved his sling! but I had no intention of paying him anymore than our share

    Each to there own i say to this one. Fact is if the Jock gives your horse a good ride, then he probably deserves something a bit extra. On the other hand if he gives it the 'Nash on Pierro in the Caulfield Guineas' ride, then they also deserve to be toasted.

    I heard on racing review that Chris Waller gives his strapper 1.5% of the winning share for each race. Nice incentive for these workers. Cheeky $18k jumps in for the doncaster win. Imagine being the same strapper if he had of done the oaks winner as well. Nice day at the office!

    $500 midweek for a good jock and $1000 on a sat,if you dont pay the going rate bye bye good jock O:-)

    $500 for a midweek? So my mistake wasnt the amount but that it was shared?

    I actually asked the trainer(ex jock) in the early days and he told me very firmly they shouldnt get a f&*^! sling. we took a guess anyway and got it nearly right I spose.

    Most employees are lucky to get positive responses from employers let alone financial bonuses for a job well done.

    I am self employed and though (unlike jockeys at times) I always give 100% effort in my professional role, I've only ever received two tips in 25 years.

    I guess the difference is slip, that most self employed people don't want to lose work, whereas jocks can always find another ride, so they'll take anything they can get and if the owners don't pay - they move on!

    But just remember that whilst jockeys might have long memories, owners have longer memories!

    I'm presuming that the majority of jocks don't declare slings? Could get interesting if the ATO wanted their cut!

    At the end of the day (they do risk a lot when they climb aboard 500kgs of horseflesh, travelling with 15 or so other horses at 50-60kph), they deserve a little extra, but they shouldn't expect it - and it should be done as a bonus and not expected! Because they don't give their riding fee back if they ride a shocker!

    True, but slings are positive cash ONLY.
    Punters win and lose! That's why the ATO aren't interested in punters (they lose much more than they win!)

    that's been my rule of thumb as well...but i have had trainers that have told me that they don't like that. So to stay on side wit them I've taken their advice....A good ride that gets you good dollars should be rewarded... And to me that is the outside figure..I've actually gone as low as $200, on the advice of a trainer...and the jock jumped off next ride!!!!

    I have 100w for the jock and 100w for the trainer if the come in no matter what the odds that's the sling....

    The farrier that looks after my hacks and one racehorse at spell times does a great job and charges top dollar for it, yet when I offered more cash to cover the extra time and care he took to get the lame racehorse sound, he took offence! In his words he's doing what he is already well paid to do and wouldnt accept anything more than a few beers. The only time Ive ever accepted a gift(concert tickets) from an employer was when I had put in loads more time than I was paid for. Yet in the racing world everyone seems happy to recieve 'handouts'

    Im with the sling thing but I dont understand why/how these guys can justify jumping OFF if the last one wasnt as much as they expected. What do they do when they ride a horse owned wholly or in part by a trainer who doesnt sling? or Bob Peters.. anyone know if he slings? or a great horse that can win blindfolded that they all want to ride?, or never present owners. It must get tough deciding between the average horse with genorous owners or the best horse with tight owners :/

    Greedy little midgets thats all they are walk around with footballs under there arms they think there shit dont stink half of them always got there hand out
