Oscar Bonavena and the great Mark Purdon

Harness & Greyhounds
How's this for a phenomenal Race from the "old school"...handicap stand, on grass, the Banks Peninsular D.G Jones Cup on the weekend. Brilliant.

What an exciting race! Handicapping at it's best.

JayJay, you forgot to make mention of the brilliant vision. Love the close-ups as they go down the back straight. One can have a really good look at just about every horse. Unlike the constant chopping & changing of vision here. You just find the horse you're looking for & then they switch to another view. You look hard & find the horse you're following only to have the vision switch yet again. It is so infuriating. Or the horses look like ants running down the back straight. That's if you can see them for the setting sun, dust or smoke!

Plus, I would imagine very little concussion for the horses hooves & body to deal with, unlike our tracks. The only problem I could forsee about so much grass & wet ground would be thrush & seedy toe in constantly wet hooves.

LJ, the NZ vision has been superb for years, the "split screen" is hardly new technology and it works superbly on their bigger circuits. Superb viewing.

Oscar was the main attraction in the race  and was favourite, and as a result, got deserved added attention. Added bonus is that the caller always gets the horses names correct (even in a 20 horse field) and you don't have to worry about who he has backed and the subsequent absurd barracking that occurs. Saddle cloth number 20 saluting would not occur too often.

It is a pity that Mark Purdon doesn't drive that often these days. In my view, one of the top 3 I have ever seen.

The "Mot" and Methven on the grass always produce terrific racing.
