WOW is the sentiment....half the field to bonds, and drawn 1 - 4 talk about lucky....I guess if thisbeachrighthere wasn't ODM, they would have got 1 - 6?

Should be a $200k track work session for the bond team.
Such a shame jack mac is not there to make it a good contest.

For a long time the Nugget has been my fav race, not a lot to get excited about here. How do the connections feel, how can you get excited about beating yourself once you get over 16?

This Nugget is what happens when you don't protect and develop your local breeding industry. It makes the whole on track scenario a farce. Not Bondy's fault ...he has been around a long time and has invested heavily in the industry and is now in a position where he can use the status quo to his advantage .....as opposed to the best interests of a competitive on track gambling based industry. In an era where the numbers of participants are shrinking the purchasing power to obtain going quality young horses from NZ is swaying the pendulum even more strongly in favour of that model than has been exhibited here previously by the Hall Snr consortium and others.  Fridays Golden Nugget signals unequivocally the transition of WA's leading stable from Hall Snr to Bond although the thrust to that dominance has been building at a growing pace for the last five years or so.
It also signals the failure of WA harness governance for decades that has been blinkered and provincial in it's outlook ...too enmeshed in peering down its own nose at immediate events rather than looking to the horizon at the future and having the vision to set developmental policy that expands competition on track rather than narrowing the profile of the success. Having a fully functional local industry ....both racing and breeding is the only answer to the current situation. Artificial Insemination should have been the forerunner to hard nosed locally focused racing policy with financial reward for local product heavily biased. Instead genuflection to the self fulfilling NZ bred prophecy has promoted a mythical horse superiority and left homegrown focus treading water.
Hard decisions like heavy Westbred stakemoney bias have been avoided like the plague here and it is probably too late to insert a bit of long term developmental policy when the perspective has evaporated to the extent obviously highlighted by this fridays race.
After all is said and done .....the majority of money invested on WA harness racing is generated here .....not in NZ....and the focus should be to return it locally .....not build the NZ balance of payments by perpetuating the short cut system.
Is it too much to expect that reinvestment across the board in all facets of the local industry to revive and grow it should occur ?
The European trotting countries have recognised the negative effect of this type of situation forever .....and legislated to protect the health of their local industry unilaterally. It's not rocket science.

Jesus curmudgeon stop making so much sense :))

Ok seriously.....well written. It's not bonds fault at all.
Good luck to him for having the cheque book to be able to buy these horses. He's been trying to knock off snr for 10 years and it looks like he has finally worn him down.

I do miss the diversity of lots of different stables making up the field in feature races.
Not hall or bonds fault. It's just the lay of the land these days.
It's quite sad to be honest.......

For all the $$$$$ bond has spent over the years has he even won a group 1. I don't think so.
To me needs a lot of big race success to knock off halls. Not just winning out at northam.

Wow. Has he ever won a group 1??? Talk about a smidge off the mark. They have won a multiple group 1 races.

Has won Group 1's........ 2 yo Ohokas Bondy, Play The Boys, Dodolicious,Derby winners Seel N Print, In The Force, Richard Henry, Oaks with Millwood Meg, Dodolicious, Ana Malak won a  4yo group 1 just two weeks ago......but, yes, I take your point. Hall has won dozens and dozens of Gp 1's over a much longer period of time..

Bondy has won plenty of group races but the evidence suggests he has ironed out the glitches that occurred in his system from time to time and is poised to dominate in a fashion unseen before in WA.
Whereas Snr used his success to focus primarily on GP racing with ever diminishing forays to the country venues Greg Bond is just as likely to have part of his team bob up at Albany or Kellerberrin or Narrogin or Northam if the horses have suitable races to participate in whilst heavily focusing on provincials at Pinjarra and Bunbury on a weekly basis.
When the well starts to run dry the horses are jetted out to the US and a new wave arrives here to repeat the process.
Xmas came early for Bondy  and the other importers of NZ horses this year with the new handicapping system throwing 3 y/o's into the maiden and low rating aged horse races...... at a concessional rate of handicap if they should beat the older horses.......like for like n all that. Saves trialing them
    :-\"

The recurring theme in those group 1 wins is they are all juvenile races.
They never seem to go on and win open age group 1's. In fact would the freo cup be the only one he has won with that horse that led all the way from the pole when it was a stand? The name escapes me.
Won't get a better chance to add one more to the list than he will sat night......

    Was it a stand then?

    Should be a stand now!

Certainly was a stand, i remember him pinging to the front and walking them all of the way.
My oath it should be a stand. Bloody disgrace that they changed it. The freo cup has lost its luster. It now feels like a B grade pacing cup instead of having its own identity.
  • OTB- We rarely agree if any, but I am 100% with you on this. The race should be a stand and should never have been changed. Was an amazing race as a stand and was normally a great spectacle.

If it was a stand, on what we have seen so far, the handicaps might just generate a tinsy wincy bit of debate.

Not the Nugget but the last at Wagin on Sunday, the maiden. First starter is the 6 year old "Dontkillthefarrier".....gee, I hope he wins and rewards some obvious patience.

I see that pesky computer is still grouping a few together, it loves Turvey (2 and 3 on Saturday NIght for Ohoka Darcy and Touch Of Success), not as fond of Peter Fairless who copped 7 and 8 at Wagin. All within the boundaries of statistical variation and probability. Can't recall seeing anything like it on such a regular basis.
