The Other Ascot Review 10/11/18

West Australian Racing
It is a super day tomorrow; great horses and plenty of options for a punt.
You may, like me, coupling into the Railway with Galaxy Star and/or the Winterbottom with Enticing star.

Anyway R/1 Dance Music is surprisingly short here at 3.0; and , yes I am going for her. The stewards noted she was cantankerous on the way to the start; sounds like Get the Vibe before she won at her  next start after such a performance. Are we allowed to blame hormones nowadays? Her form before that was just great with really good sectionals.I will put in Driftstar as a saver and leave out the Casey family horse Pablo ( I keep paying for leaving out the Casey horses).

R/2 ILWP looks a class above them. But i will put in One Short too; goes well fresh and the trial looked great.

R/3 I left out the topweight last time and he seemed to dominate Five Degrees in size and stamina.
The Missisippi horse beat AKOP last week and again I suffered badly  (there seems a pattern here). I just don't like the sudden step up in distance.
I will put the topweight in front and have a saver on Brothers Keeper.

R/4 I thought Kate Witten let Peter Hall out to save damage to all  nearby last run.but then found herself 3 deep; was a grand effort. I am hoping she is rewarded for her good deed tomorrow and the Harvey team deserve it too.

R/5 Yes I have to stick with Royal Star. Some horses just do not like Northam and she was a little bit unlucky. I am hoping this is her day and that she will go on to the Perth Cup.

R/6 Well in theory this is the big chance for ES to be beaten. Look at the time they ran  when Man Booker beat Great Shot over 1400m.
I am just hoping that her ability to regularly go under 33 for the last 600m might get her home.
I must say it is unusual to go from 1200m to 14000m and then back again to 1200m. Many horses just cannot handle the difference; remember Takedown winning in Sydney over 1200m brilliantly; then failing twice over 1400m and then back to 1200m and won the Winterbottom!

R/7 I am going Nos 1,2 and 3 here and I cannot separate them. Maybe the topweight has not come back like previous great form but you cannot leave him out. The Chix horse has improved in leaps and bounds. And of course I really hope the Harvey's horse runs on hard at the end.

R/8 I am back on Ouqba Jack ; was super last time when caught wide.
I will put in Admiral Promo as a definite back up.
Rare Coin and Master Pearl are 2 outsiders with chances.

I might start taking some all ups into GS and ES in the big races to place as I have some wins going in already.
Let's hope the best horses win; I feel I have a good barrier draw tomorrow.
All the Best.

Do these shenanigans happen in Black Type races elsewhere?
Or just the back blocks of Perth?

Was the race broadcast on Sky 2 or Sky Central ?
  • tonytony    2,436 posts
    It was certainly on central

OK thanks, I had it running on Sky 1 in the background on my computer awaiting the restart and then just heard results and the mention of late scratchings

What a fucking debacle for quaddie players.

I had 4-5-7-8 in the first leg, gave Missile.Launch no chance originally, then I have cop it as the sub on 3 out of 4 runners.

Bullshit, should be money returned on dead combinations, instead I have to take it in the A and move on.

    This is a problem

More to the point how overrated was Enticing Star...not at all surprised me!
Congrats to the Gatting guys he mowed them down nicely, few went plainly imo or has the winner grown a leg?!

Hmm not a good day at all for the cerose and white. The problem in race 5 was the blind fold was.left on Royal star !!!

They'd want to get it right when we are on showcase in 2 weeks.

Peters probably wins every race on the card haha

Interesting to see what rating Gatting gets.

Similar to Ranger who won the Lee Steere as a 98 rater (like Gatting) in 2011 beating Grand Nirvana (113) and Waratah's Secret (112). Ranger went from 98 to 110 as a result.

If Gatting goes to 110 he'll probably have to carry 57.5 in the Railway giving Galaxy Star 4.5 kgs (assuming Material Man rating 112 is the topweight with 58.5).

Ranger won the Lee Steere by 2 lengths and Man Booker (108) and Great Shot (109) aren't as highly rated as the horses Ranger beat, so Gatting should get 4-6 points less. If Gatting goes to 106 or less, he'll carry about 55.5 or less in the Railway.

I thought WFA wins were free from a penalty going into major handicaps or is that just a thing of the past?
  • careycarey    6,424 posts
be a bit hard to give it a penalty when it hasn't got a weight yet.

i think ngawyni is about right, or maybe even a bit more than he reckons.
wfa and ratings rarely match, but it's beaten horses on level weights with higher rating so it will pay a price.

Just looking it over, who rides him in Railway, Pike,Parnham,Warwick, all committed,Pateman wont make weight, anyway he has jumped ship to Lindsay Smith,so who does that leave for Gatting, maybe Staeck, cant use Tayla Stone being a apprentice, perhaps Noske.be enteresting.

Noske would have the pick of Bob's second stringers you'd think (either him or Chris.P)

You are right there, really doesn't leave a lit of top liners, especially with top line jockeys thin, with Brad Parnham and Lee Newman still out,i guess it will work itself out.
