Can someone please tell me where to find the ratings system rules, as I thought I had an understanding of it but obviously I have completely misunderstood how it works.

Case in point - Marseillaise, went into the Broome Cup ($100k race) last year as a c80 rater and wins, something I was very happy about as Cribby provided me with a very generous $8 about as close to a good thing as you could get.... but that's another story.

Between then and now, has 6 runs in town, metro class last time I looked and shouldn't alter his country rating, and finished down the track in all of them. Then comes back to Broome, it is that time of the year, as a c82 rater..... so he wins a $100k race and gets 2 points for doing so???  Runs a fast finishing 4th first up for no change in ratings, then gets ridden very cold in a slowly run race in which 1, 2, 3 at the 800m run 1, 2 and 3, and drops 2 points. So for 2 country runs, one an eyecatcher and one a "wonder if he is trying" ends up at the same rating as what he was when he won the $100k race.

How does this happen?

Just read the fine print - "handicappers discretion"

The documenmt doesn't give any explanation for horses transitioning from metro ratings to country ratings.

Plain Lucky came to Broome as a m71, and was assessed as a c71.

Dempsey came to Broome as a m74 and was assessed as a c78.

Seize Control started in the Broome Cup last year after winning the $40k Kimberley Cup by 3 lengths and the Derby Cup as well, as a c80 and was eased down by his rider and found to have heat stress, so probably shouldnt have dropped a point on that run, but lets say maybe 1.

Then starts in the Mungrup Sprint, a metro rated race over an unsuitable distance, and then starts in town against Roman Knows (1400m) and turns up back in Broome as a c76, runs unplaced first up in a sprint and drops to a c75....... no wonder it has won 2 of its last 3..... was a ratings certainty, wish I had looked into this earlier.

As nearly everyone in the racing industry keeps saying. Its a shambles. As I have stated before, ratings should be set in stone. And when the horse goes from metro, provincial, country, 4 rating points between each. No ifs, buts. Eliminate the bias, guess work and (and dare I sayit?) favouritism.

    exactly, brubaker.

it astounds me that trainers and waroa have not have not demanded some form of consistency. as it stands now its all incomprehensible and slip shod.

its not hard for Gods sake..have a system and stick to it.

is is like this in the eastern states?

Why raise the race min weight to 55kg and all weights a kilo to get a 59kg topweight in a race - and only have a 4kg spread between the toppie and bottom weight when you could just lower the rating of the race by 2 points and get the same result and have a fairer spread of weights - i.e. 5kg between top and bottom weight.

Is it just plain laziness or they just don't like using handicappers discretion to make things fair and reasonable - they only use it to protect themselves!? [-(

this is where i am confused...destroy 18 starts, 5 wins, apart from the bunbury cup the other 4 are mid week/provincial....or maybe 1 was on a saturday. rating 92, prize money $146K

operational, another 4yo with 21 starts. 7 wins and nearly $334k..rating lower. why, because of the cup which was really just a mediocre saturday field.

what happens if destroy wins tomorrow? after 19 starts and less than $200k its stuffed!!

Falc, if you elect to run a horse out of class and it wins then it gets re-handicapped from the min rating of the race and would cop a 4 point penalty from there. So if the race is rated 90+ and the horse goes in as a 78 and wins it would go to a rating of 94.

I Fn hate something I cant understand..so you get 4 points on the minimum rating...what about if the fields weak?

How does Battle Emblem ($564 000 earner) get a rating of c84 in Broome? 12 starts ago he was a m101! Even if he lost one point per start he should be a c93 minimum. (m89 + 4pts) Went from a m91 in Perth to a c88 in Broome without starting. Broome must be rated harder than Perth Sat meets? :O

Actually I got that wrong. Battle Emblem should be a c97. Because as I have stated earlier. 4pts from metro to provincial and another 4pts to country.
